Student Government
Student government at UC Santa Cruz empowers students to lead, advocate, and shape campus life. From campuswide bodies like the Student Union Assembly (SUA) and the Graduate Student Association (GSA) to college-based student governments, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference. The annual Campus Elections give students the power to vote on key leadership roles and referenda.
Whether you’re interested in policy, budgeting, event planning, or grassroots advocacy, student government offers the tools—and the community—to lead change.

Student Union Assembly (SUA)
The Student Union Assembly is the official undergraduate student government at UC Santa Cruz. SUA advocates for student needs on campus, across the UC system, and at the state and national level. Through funding, policy work, and campus organizing, SUA supports student voices and empowers collective action. All undergrads are welcome to get involved—whether by voting, joining a committee, or leading change.

College’s student government
Each of UCSC’s residential colleges has its own student government—senate, council, or parliament—where students have a direct voice in shaping their college community. These bodies organize events, manage funds, and advocate on behalf of their peers, creating leadership opportunities and a stronger connection within college life. Every college government has its own structure and membership process, generally open to all affiliates once basic attendance criteria are met.

Campus elections
Every spring, UC Santa Cruz holds its consolidated Campus Elections—an all-student vote on leadership positions in the Student Union Assembly and Graduate Student Association, as well as key student fee referenda. Conducted entirely online, the process includes ranked-choice voting for SUA officer races and strict eligibility and voting thresholds to ensure meaningful outcomes.
Participation has steadily increased in recent years, with over 30% of undergraduates and nearly a quarter of graduate students voting in some cycles. Results are certified by the Dean of Students and Chancellor, with final oversight by the UC President when necessary.
Students play a vital role in shaping campus life—vote to make your voice heard.

Graduate Student Association (GSA)
The GSA is the official student government representing UCSC’s graduate and professional students. It champions grad voices on campus and beyond—advocating on issues like tuition, health insurance, housing, childcare, civil rights, and support for international and underrepresented students.
The GSA Council, made up of elected officers and department representatives, meets regularly to shape policy, allocate discretionary funds, and appoint graduate members to key campus committees. The GSA also offers travel grants, hosts events, and collaborates with the UC-wide Graduate & Professional Council (UCGPC) to amplify graduate priorities across the university system.
Graduate students are encouraged to participate—whether by running for an elected position, becoming a department rep, or attending Council meetings. Visit the GSA website to get involved!
