Student Union Assembly

Our purpose
The Student Union Assembly (SUA) is the official undergraduate student government at UC Santa Cruz, representing over 17,000 students at the campus, local, state, and federal levels. Since its founding in 1985—when it successfully campaigned to make the Banana Slug our official mascot—SUA has been committed to public service and student advocacy.
SUA serves as the official voice of undergraduates on campus-wide and system-wide committees. Through events, rallies, conferences, and forums, SUA promotes civic engagement, activism, and discussion across diverse viewpoints. We also provide training in direct action, student organizing, and representation.
The SUA is a proud member of the University of California Student Association (UCSA), connecting UCSC students to systemwide advocacy efforts.
Governing documents
The Student Union Assembly operates under a Constitution and set of Bylaws that guide its structure, responsibilities, and decision-making processes.

SUA elections
The Student Union Assembly (SUA) holds annual elections where undergraduate students vote for their campus-wide representatives. Through this process, students elect SUA Officers and representatives for key leadership roles. Participating in SUA elections is one of the most direct ways students can shape campus policy, funding priorities, and the future of student life at UC Santa Cruz.
To learn more about the election process, including candidate requirements and campaign guidelines, review the SUA Elections Code and the Elections Packet.
